THE OFFICIAL UNIFORM
The Scout uniform will help you achieve the objectives of Scouting. The uniform by itself can't make a
good Scout or a good troop, but its use will improve both the Scout and the troop because it is a visible symbol of Scouting.
WHERE TO WEAR THE UNIFORM
The uniform is suitable for many occasions for both Scouts and leaders:
Scouting activities. The uniform is appropriate for nearly all Scouting activities. It is especially
appropriate where travel is involved and Scouts will be in front of the public. There may be activities within some Scouting functions that are not suitable for uniform wear, such as doing camp kitchen work or cleaning out a creek bed.
Scouting Anniversary Week. Scouts should be encouraged to wear their uniforms during this
week in February.
Special Scout participation. Where Scouts act as color guards, march in parades, and escort
distinguished visitors at functions, the uniform is in order.
WHEN NOT TO WEAR THE UNIFORM
The uniform is not appropriate for Scouts or Scouters under three kinds of conditions:
When a commercial product or service is being sold, even for Scout money-earning purposes.
When the activity would tend to dishonor or discredit the uniform.
Whe the wearing of the uniform would tend to imply endorsement by Scouting of a product,
service, or political event or candidate or philosophy. Scouts and Scouters are encouraged to take active part in political matters as individuals, but to do so in uniform would imply endorsement by the Scouting movement.
The above information was taken from the 1998 Edition of THE SCOUTMASTER HANDBOOK.
