|
The bear achievements are divided into four sections:
1.God
2.Country
3.Family
4.Self
To receive his Bear rank, a Cub Scout must complete a set number of
achievements under each section. Each individual achievement has a set number of activities that must be completed. For some achievements, all the activities must be done. Most of the achievements require a certain number of activities be done out of several listed. After the Cub Scout has earned his Bear rank, he may use the unused activities for elective points toward an arrow point. But, he cannot reuse an activity that he had already used toward his Bear rank.
There are two achievements under the section titled "God." To earn his Bear
rank, your son must complete one.
There are five achievements under the section titled "Country." To earn his
Bear rank, your son must complete three.
There are six achievements under the section titled "Family." To earn his
Bear rank, your son must complete four.
There are eleven achievements under the section titled "Self." To earn his
Bear rank, your son must complete four.
Please refer to pages 22 and 23 in your Bear book for a complete list of all
four sections and the achievements under each section. You can then turn to a particular achievement to see how many activities are listed for that achievement, and how many are required for completion of that activity.
Our Den activities will focus first on completing the requirements for Bear
rank. Some are designed and intended to be done at home and with the family. Others can easily be done in Den activities. Following is a list of the Sections, the achievements, and the activities under those achievements that we plan to cover as a Den. When you do "homework" please mark the pages for the activities you completed so they can be found easily and give your Bear book to one of your Den Leaders so we can record your competed work. Periodically, we will meet with a boy's parent to review the progress made toward his Bear rank.

When Achievement 19 is covered by the Den, a parent's presence will be
required. Achievement 19 covers the use, care and rules governing a Cub Scout and knives. He will earn his whittling chip upon completion of this Achievement. For a Cub Scout to carry a pocket knife, he must earn his whittling chip first. Part of earning the whittling chip is learning the rules of knife safety and promising to follow them. Any Leader can at any time ask a Cub Scout to produce his whittling chip to show he has earned the right to carry and use his pocket knife. If a Cub Scout cannot produce his whittling chip - the Leader then has the right to take the pocket knife and hold it until it can be returned to the boy's parent. It is, therefore, important for the parents to understand and know the rules that will govern their son's use of a knife in Cub Scout activities. So, for the Den meeting when we cover this Achievement, we will require a parent to be present to learn and help teach his son Cub Scout use and rules for knives.
